HOW DOES IT WORK?
-
Explained simply (affiliate marketing 101)...
- You make an account on both cashback sites (Rakuten & GreatCanadianRebates)
- You shop normally, but tell the store "this cashback site sent me to you"
- The store pays the cashback site a commission for getting them a sale
- The cashback site shares the commission with you
Need more details?
I'll guide you through it step by step below, but here's a quick summary: You sign up on both cashback sites, search for the store you plan to shop at, compare cashback rates and choose whichever pays more, and then use their provided store link (or browser extension) to shop as you normally would. The provided link is tracked with cookies which determine all the cashback details.
Why? What's the catch?
A common misconception is that cashback sites do something malicious with your information (and then give you a cut, how nice of them?). In reality, retailers value sales and are willing to pay for them. Cashback sites capitalize on this and share a small piece of the pie with you. Personally, I don't have privacy concerns with them. The cashback site only knows the amount spent and occasionally the broad category of the items (Home, Automotive, etc.), not specific details about your purchase.
Want to know a secret?
Chances are, at some point, you've already shopped online after clicking someone's affiliate link (ever been on a coupon website that automatically opens the retailer's website anytime you click something?). The only difference is, on that shopping trip, 100% of the commission went to the publisher (who got you to click their link), and none back to you. 😔
